Choose your path
| Path | Best if you… | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Professional session | Are new, have complex pain, or want fire/wet methods | Licensed acupuncturist, TCM practitioner, or trained bodyworker |
| Home silicone / pump | Have simple muscle goals and guidance | Techniques guide + safety rules |
For almost everyone new to cupping, a professional dry cupping session is the smartest first step.
How to find a practitioner
- Look for licensed acupuncturists / TCM practitioners, or massage therapists with specific cupping training (rules vary by region).
- Read reviews that mention communication, hygiene, and pacing—not only “amazing results.”
- Ask: dry or wet? fire or pump? how long do cups stay on? what aftercare do you recommend?
- Share medications (especially blood thinners), skin conditions, pregnancy, and medical history up front.
How to prepare
-
Eat lightly
Don’t arrive starving or immediately after a huge meal. Light food 1–2 hours before is ideal for many people.
-
Wear accessible clothing
Loose tops or layers that allow access to your back and shoulders. You’ll typically remain partially draped.
-
Hydrate
Water before and after supports how you feel post-session. Avoid heavy alcohol beforehand.
-
Skip the lotion on treatment areas
Unless your practitioner asks for oil, arrive with clean, lotion-free skin on the areas to be cupped.
-
Plan visible marks
If you have photos, beach plans, or formal events, schedule accordingly—marks can last several days.
What happens in a first session
- Intake: goals, history, contraindications
- Consent: suction level, areas to avoid, mark expectations
- Placement: cups applied for roughly 3–10+ minutes depending on method and tolerance
- Sensation: pulling, warmth, pressure—should be intense but not sharp or panicky; speak up to adjust
- Removal & check: skin assessed; optional light massage or rest
- Aftercare briefing: what to do for the next 24 hours
Immediately after
- Drink water; keep the area warm if you chill easily
- Avoid intense heat (hot tub, sauna) and extreme cold on fresh marks unless advised otherwise
- Gentle movement is usually fine; skip maximal lifting if you feel wiped out
- Don’t pick at skin; moisturize lightly if dry after oil is cleaned off
Full aftercare detail lives on the safety & aftercare page.
How many sessions?
Some people feel looser after one visit. Muscular or chronic patterns often need a short series (for example weekly for a few weeks), then reassessment. If nothing changes after several appropriate sessions, revisit diagnosis and consider other care paths.
